         Repair of Storm Damage

Project: To rehabilitate buildings that were damaged by a hurricane that
struck New Caledonia 18 January 1944.

Description: The principal damage caused by the hurricane was suffered by
the third unit of the 5th Convalescent Hospital, the Quartermaster Area of the
Sopac General Depot and the Ordnance Area of the Sopac General Depot.
Approximately fifty framed ward tents were badly damaged in the former
location and in the Depot areas sixty-eight warehouses most of which were
40’ x 108’ New Zealand type were damaged. The extent of the damage to
these buildings may be seen in one of the attached photographs.

Operation of an Engineer Supply Dump

For six months the regiment was charged with the responsibility of operating
an Engineer Supply Dump located near the railhead at Paita. Supplies stored
in the dump included explosives, camouflage materials, barbed wire and road
material. In connection with the operation of this dump it was necessary
also to operate six water points.

         Tire Repair Plant

Project: To construct a building to house a Tire Repair Plant.

Description: This project consisted of the construction of a 50’ x 220’ Shop
         Building.

         52nd Ordnance Road

Project: To rehabilitate approximately five miles of road through an
         ammunition dump.

Description: When American forces first occupied New Caledonia in 1942 a
large part of the ammunition brought to the island was stored in the valley of
a stream that flowed into the Dumbea River. The access road to this area
had been built by the residents of this valley and was unsuited to heavy
military traffic. The road was built through a low, flat area.

Since it was undertaken during the early part of the regiment’s stay on the
island when there was no suitable equipment available for such work this job
was a difficult one. Progress was further hampered by the fact that
ammunition was being moved in and out of the dump area during the
         construction of the road.
