         lie M’bo Training Area

Project: To construct typical Japanese coastal fortifications to be used for
         training purposes.

Description: The Japanese fortifications on the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert
Islands had presented some new problems. In order that these problems
could be studied more thoroughly it was necessary to have some typical
fortifications for training purposes. The job of constructing these was
assigned to the regiment. The entire first battalion took part in this project.
Two companies were moved to the site of the job, an island off the coast of
New Caledonia, and the third company was charged with the responsibility
of obtaining supplies for the job. Fortifications constructed included a wall
of reinforced concrete five feet wide, eight feet high and one hundred feet
long; a barricade consisting of a cocoa-nut log crib filled with sand; four
cocoa-nut log pill boxes; fifty concrete tetrahedrons; several positions for
riflemen; and a barbed wire entanglement.

         Medical Supply Depot

Project: To construct a depot for the warehousing of medical supplies for
         the South Pacific Area.

Description: This project consisted of the erection of four New Zealand
         prefabricated 40’ x 96’ warehouses, a slab for a refrigerator and a mess hall
         building 20’ x 100’.

         Engineer Supply Depot

Project: To enlarge existing facilities for the storage of engineer supplies and
         equipment.

Description: Although a great part of the engineer supplies for the South
Pacific passed through Noumea there was never adequate space for handling
all the material. To properly care for these supplies an engineer supply area
was developed near Noumea. Included within this area were locations for
the proper storage of explosives, lumber, equipment and engineer supplies
which could be stored without being covered. Seven warehouses 60’ x 100’
and one 48’ x 96’ were constructed to care for that material which had to
be stored under cover. In addition several miles of road and four bridges
were built. One hundred thousand yards of earth were moved.
