THE 36TH ENGINEER COMBAT REGIMENT
THE CADRE FOR THE 353RD ENGINEERS CAME FROM THE 36TH
COMBAT ENGINEERS. AND THOSE CADREMEN WERE VERY HAPPY TO
HAVE DEPARTED FROM THE 36TH SINCE THEY HAD BEEN IN FORMATION
WHEN OLD "BLOOD AND GUTS" GENERAL PATTON GAVE HIS FAMOUS
SPEECH AT FORT BRAGG, NC.
AN EXCERPT FROM A LETTER OF COMMENDATION FROM THE
SECRETARY OF THE ARMY COMMENDED THE 36TH "FOR EXCEPTIONALLY
MERITORIOUS AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN SUPPORT OF AMERICAN
AND ALLIED FORCES IN THE NORTH AFRICAN, MEDITERRANEAN AND
EUROPEAN THEATERS OF OPERATIONS DURING THE PERIOD NOVEMBER
1942 TO MAY 1945. THROUGHOUT THIS PERIOD OF RIGOROUS COMBAT
DUTY, THE 36TH ENGINEER COMBAT REGIMENT DEMONSTRATED
EXEMPLARY COMBAT ENGINEER EFFICIENCY AND OUTSTANDING
PERFORMANCE. WHETHER MAKING ASSUALT LANDINGS IN NORTH
AFRICA, SICILY, SALERNO, ANZIO OR SOUTHERN FRANCE;
COMPLETING EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ENGINEER TASKS WHILE UNDER
ENEMY FIRE; OR TEMPORARILY FIGHTING AS INFANTRY WHEN THE
SITUATION DEMANDED; GALLANTRY, VERSATILITY AND DETERMINATION
WERE THE HALLMARKS OF THE REGIMENT."
