PowerPoint assignment: Gaining strategic advantage

Assignment overview

Your task for this assignment is to create a short presentation on the eight ways of gaining a competitive advantage that the text and online notes gave for chapter 2. For this assignment you will need to get some images from the Internet. Be sure you copy down the URLs where you got your images from so you can include them in the list of references at the end of the presentation.

This presentation is expected to be six to seven slides in length. The first slide must be a title page displaying your name, the date, and the subject of your presentation. The last slide (or two) must list at least three URLs where you got your information and resources (such as images, music, etc.).

You must submit an electronic copy of your presentation in .pptx format to the Desire2Learn drop box for grading. The scoring rubric (and requirements checkoff) is as follows:

There are 50 total points available on this assignment. Submit your .pptx file to the appropriate dropbox on Desire2Learn when you are finished.

Assignment requirements

  1. A common theme/style must be used throughout the presentation. This must be one of the standard themes that comes with PowerPoint and must be different than the default Office theme. The theme you choose should include some recognizable design element on the slides. (2 pts)
  2. The first (title) slide must include a background image. This is NOT just an image inserted on the page, but the background of the slide must be modified to BE the image. If you can click on the image and select it with the mouse after you have made it the background of the slide, then you haven't really made it the background of that slide. (2 pts)
  3. The title slide must contain your name, the subject of the presentation, and the date. (1 pt)
  4. The due date, the slide number, and your name must appear in the footer of each slide except for the first slide. Please note that footers do not necessarily appear at the bottom of the slide in PowerPoint. Where the footer information appears depends on the theme that was chosen. (2 pts)
  5. Make sure that the header/footer does not show up on the first slide. (1 pt)
  6. Insert a sound on the title slide that will play when clicked on. It should show up as a little speaker. If you do not know how to get a sound file that will work with PowerPoint, contact the instructor for help. Make sure that sound still works when your presentation is played on a different computer. Some sounds are available at: sounds.html.(3 pts)
  7. You must insert a visual transition effect on the second slide. Feel free to use transition effects on other slides if you wish. (2 pts)
  8. The second slide in the presentation must include an audio transition effect. (2 pts)
  9. Modify the document properties for the presentation so the author property is your full name (first and last name minimum). (1 pt) [Image of document properties panel]
  10. Modify the document properties for the presentation so the subject property is CIS 123 PowerPoint assignment. (1 pt) [Image of document properties panel]
  11. At least two images from the Internet must be included in the presentation. The images must be cited on your citations slide to indicate exactly where they were obtained. These images are in addition to the image used for the background on the first slide. You may place these images anywhere in your presentation where there is room. Resize and move the images in the presentation as needed so they don't interfere with the text. (4 pts)
  12. Note: The next item requires a list. There will be several different lists required in this presentation. All of them require that animations be done for each individual list item. It is easier to choose that animation as you start typing the list rather than add it in at the end.
  13. The second slide should have the title, "Strategic vs. tactical" (without the quotes of course). It should contain a bulleted list of two items which define the terms strategic and tactical. (2 pts)
  14. The third slide should have the title, "Ways to gain competitive advantage (1-4)" (without the quotes of course) and contain a numbered list (from 1 through 4) with the first four techniques for gaining a competitive advantage. (2 pts)
  15. The fourth slide should have the title, "Ways to gain competitive advantage (5-8)" (without the quotes of course) and contain a numbered list (from 5 through 8) with the last four techniques for gaining a competitive advantage. (2 pts)
  16. The fifth slide should be a hidden slide so it does not show up when the slideshow is played. (2 pts)
  17. Delete the text boxes on the fifth slide where the title and content would normally go. (1 pt)
  18. The fifth slide should contain WordArt which displays your name. (2 pts)
  19. Your Wordart name on the fifth slide should use a green font. (1 pt)
  20. Your Wordart name on the fifth slide should use a 72 point font. (1 pt)
  21. Your Wordart name on the fifth slide should be rotated so it is upside down. That's a rotation of 180 degrees, which is also called "flip vertical" in Excel. (1 pt)
  22. The last slide (or two) should have the title, "Citations" and contain a bulleted list of references for the sources of the presentation. For this assignment, you do NOT have to follow the APA or MLA style rules. For resources that came from the Web you must cite the exact web page where the material came from - not the search engine page that you used to get the material. There must be at least four citations since you have three images minimum and also need to cite the text book. The citation for the text can be as follows: Eight ways from: Sousa, Kenneth, and Oz, Effy. Management Information Systems (7th ed.). (p. 38). Stamford, CT: Cengage Learning, 2015. The sound will probably also have to be cited. (2 pts)
  23. ALL of the citations on the last slide (or two) which refer to material on the Internet must include URLs which function as active links to the material they refer to. There should be at least three citations which function as links since there are at least three images from the Internet in your presentation. (2 pts)
  24. The list that contains the citations should be a bulleted list, but use non-default bullets. Make sure the bullets for the citation list are different than the bullets for the strategic vs. tactical list. (2 pts)
  25. There were four lists in the set of requirements for this assignment. Here are additional requirements:
    1. The first set of four "ways" (1-4) must be a numbered list starting with 1. (1 pt)
    2. The second set of four "ways" (5-8) must be a numbered list starting with 5. (1 pt)
    3. Each of the bulleted lists must use different bullets. (1 pt)
    4. Each of the lists must include animations for each of their individual list items. Please note that you want to animate the lists "by paragraph" and test the presentation to make sure EACH list item is animated individually rather than just the list as a whole. (3 pts)
  26. Check the spelling of the presentation to make sure there are no spelling errors. Also check the grammar by at least reading through the presentation. One point will be deducted for each error found. (3 pts)
  27. You should save your file and try to run it on a different computer to make sure the audio and images still show up as intended. One of the most common errors students make on this assignment is not having the audio included with the submission.
