The Computer Information Systems program at Kishwaukee College offers
students the opportunity to earn either an Associate of Applied Science
degree or one of four certificates.
The A.A.S. degree (62 credit hours)
covers the computer field in general. It includes everything from
basic applications to using computers in business to programming
in C/C++, Visual Basic, and COBOL. It prepares students for
employment as entry level application programmers or computer
operators.
The certificates specialize in particular areas of interest.
We are offering the following certificates:
programming, networking, web design, web administration, and business
applications. These certificates are designed to be completed
in one school year and allow the student to focus on the area
most relevant to his or her interests and job needs.
The Computer Programming certificate
(25.5 credit hours) is intended for students who are
interested in pursuing a career as a computer programmer.
Required classes include logic and program design, two
semesters of Visual Basic, and two semesters of C/C++.
The Data Communications and Networking certificate
(20 credit hours) is intended for students who want to
specialize in computer networking. Required classes
include two semesters of network configuration and
maintenance, network administration and security,
and Windows NT.
The Microcomputer Applications certificate (20
credit hours) is intended for students who need general
computer skills for positions in business or government.
Popular word processing, spreadsheet, and database
programs are covered.
The Webmaster certificate (24 credit hours) has
two separate options, one for web administration
and one for web development. The
Web Administration option focuses on network
configuration and maintenance, server administration,
and network operating systems (Unix and Windows NT).
The basics of web page design and Java programming are
also included. The Web Development
option includes more web site design
and Java programming, and emphasizes commerce and
business in place of networking courses.
Each of these programs provides students with a
variety of opportunities to customize their education
based on their interests and availability. Electives
are included in the degree program and most of the
certificate programs. Many courses have both day and
evening sections to accommodate work schedules.
Kishwaukee’s computer program is in a period of
rapid growth. Our program is changing in response
to trends in the business world, and we welcome your
feedback on additional offerings that would be
useful. We look forward to having you in our programs!
