The section of the river in which our regiment has been swimming has been declared off limits by the Medics. The reason: sewage from upstream has made our part unfit for bathing purposes; therefore, we must go upstream to that point above the contamination point. This is going to be darn inconvenient because it is at least a mile or more distant. Perhaps in time we will work out some sort of transportation but until then we will have to work in on the leg movement or the hitch-hike procedure.
I was tired as usual today but succeeded in turning out quite a bit of work. Who knows but that close of this week may see the end of my agenda. I hope so.
I received your letter of September 4th in which you are preparing to go to Milwaukee. This new place to Lopezes moved to must be near the downtown-district because it has such a low numbered address. It was a year ago Labor Day that we spent two days there. That is when the gang of us went golfing. Or maybe I'm wrong and it was two years ago. It is discomforting to forget the year in which something happened.
Although this evening is free for me as far as running the movie machine is concerned, I believe it will be well taken up by an evening's entertainment at the amphitheater. Tonight promises to outdo all others in the entertainment line. We are going to have the usual band concert which will be followed by a program arranged by Company "C". No doubt Louis Cava will have a large part in the proceedings for it is right up his alley to appear on the stage and perform. Molyneaux and I are laying odds that he will even turn up to be the Master of Ceremonies.
After that will come the picture which I will stay to see again. First of all, I would like to know a little bit more about the picture because last night I was unable to hear the sound during a good many scenes and then too, I will have to find out how the story ends so that in case we will not be able to reshow the film up the island, I will at least be able to tell them about the conclusion.
Its bad enough to be covered with scars from scratched mosquito bites but when the mosquitoes have to go and bit the lobe of your ear in two places, that is the limit. I have some mosquito repellent but I never bother to smear it on so the horde keeps devouring me alive.
Evidently the numbering of the V-mails only goes up to one million because the one I received from you on the 3rd was 973639 while today's letter went back to the low figures with 16575. Now that we see the series repeats itself we can watch to see if during one of the sixty or so chances in the million comes up twice with the same number; i.e., whether one of your letters in this new series from one to a million will come up with the same number which a letter in the first series had.
By the way, I have been sending out two letters per day for quite some time now so you can tell if any are missing by checking to see that you receive the two per. If I should change the habit or fail to write two letters or not write at all, I will always mention the fact in the very next letter.
The reason I mentioned that is because according to what letters you tell me you have received as of the 4th, one letter is missing for the preceding four days. Those letters plus what will normally accumulate over that Labor Day holiday must have added up to a something when you got back from your trip on Tuesday.
Since the show will not begin until 6:30, I see no reason why I will not be able to write somebody a letter between 5:30 and 6:30 this evening after supper.
So-long,
